What's the Difference Between UV and Aqueous Coatings?

You've spent time and energy to make sure that your print piece has a beautiful design, has been proofed and spell-checked over and over, and now it's almost time to get in on the press and in your hands! One last thing, though. Do you want to have a UV coating or an aqueous coating? Or any coating at all?

The coating on your print pieces makes all of the difference, because that's what protects it from elements, and keeps it looking new for longer. At Lake Printing, we specialize in taking your ideas and turning them into reality when it comes to your print marketing at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here are a few ideas to help you know what coating would be best for your piece.

What is Aqueous Coating?

An aqueous coating is clean, fast-drying, and water-based. It is used to protect your print piece, and it provides a high-gloss or matte surface. It can deter dirt and fingerprints, which makes it ideal for any piece that will be handled on a routine basis. If you're printing postcards or other pieces that will be traveling through the mail? What about business cards that will be handled many times, thrown on desks and in wallets? What about brochures, catalog covers or presentation folders? Aqueous coatings provide a more substantial resistance to scuffs than other vanishes, and it's typically applied to the entire print piece. It's also a water base coating, which means it's more environmentally friendly than some other coatings.

UV Coating

UV coatings get their name because they are cured by exposure to ultraviolet light. This causes it to quickly dry and harden the coating. You can achieve an extremely high gloss with UV coatings, compared to others, but they may crack when scored or folded because of the thickness and hardness of the coating. Sometimes it can be considered too shiny for some uses, so you'll want to check out several examples before making your final decision. You will also have to remember that UV coatings can't be foil stamped, and any embossing must be done after the coating has been applied.

When To NOT Coat Your Print Piece

Believe it or not, there are a few reasons why you don't want to coat your print piece. If you want to write on your product, it can be very challenging to write on coated paper, and while you can easily write on it with permanent marker, it doesn't stick well and can wipe off. Are you order greeting cards or note cards? Make sure that you specify that you don't want a coating on the inside so you can write on them.
