How Copyrighting Can Affect Your Print Materials

In a world where everything is made easily accessible through internet searches - it's easier than ever to accidentally break the law with your print materials. As a small business, you're probably trying to balance many hats, so it only makes sense to be your own graphic designer when you need to make posters, pamphlets, and business cards at the Lake of the Ozarks. Unfortunately, many individuals run to Google when they need certain photos, logos, graphics, and even fonts, and those materials are not up for grabs. January first is Copyright Law Day, so we wanted to take some time to dig into copyright laws and how that can affect you as a business through your print materials.

The Definition

There are three types of legally protected materials that could be important to you, and it's important to know the difference: patents, trademarks, and copyrights. A patent protects an invention, think of things like tools, vehicles, supplies, etc. A trademark protects brand names and logos that appear on goods and services. Finally, a copyright protects original and artistic works - this is probably where a small business will need to be cautious.

Protecting Your Print Materials

There are two things to keep in mind when thinking about protecting your print materials - protecting them from being stolen, and protecting you from accidentally stealing. In the first situation, if you've created a logo, taken photos, or written anything special for your print piece and you don't want anyone to reuse it without your permission, you'll need to have it copywritten. There are some laws that can protect you even if you don't pay the copyright fee - but if you want to ultimately be protected, it's easier to go through the proper channels.

In the second instance, you need to protect yourself from being called into court because you used something that was copywritten. The most common ways you'll probably infringe copyright is through photos, logos, and even fonts. Did you realize that many items on the web are copywritten and not available for use?

From graphics that you grabbed from Google for your poster to the cool font that matched the theme of your event - when you use these items for commercial use you are opening yourself up for trouble. There are some exceptions for personal use, and sometimes there are items that are in public domain, but it's always best to try and not evade the laws. If you really want to use something for commercial use, you can try to reach out to the copyright holder and get permission.

Fun Facts About Printing

Printing has been around for thousands of years, in one for or another. From a homemade ink on leaves to the beautifully finished print products at the Lake of the Ozarks that you can appreciate today. There are some pretty unusual and interesting facts tied to the history of printing, and while we are completely automated and up to date on our printing process, we thought it would be fun to take a look at printing from yesteryear and a few other fun facts!

Did you know that Ben Franklin was not the first printer in his family? He was only a teenager when his older brother was publishing the New England Courant. Of course, by the age of 22, Ben was in business for himself and getting the Pensylvania Gazette out on the street.

According to the Guinness World Book of Records, the smallest book printed is a 22-page Japanese picture book. It contains mostly flowers, and measures 0.0291x0.0295". You will need a magnifying glass to see the images!

Before programs and computers were invented, typefaces and fonts were originally created by hand and often named after the printer who created them. A great example is French printer Claude Garamonde - and his font is still used today.

J.K Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" broke a printing industry record! The pop-culture phenomenon had print runs in the millions, anyway, but "Deathly Hallows" great outnumbered the others with 12 million copies in its first run - making it the largest initial print run ever recorded!

When the incredible Hulk was initially printed, his skin was actually supposed to be gray. There was a mistake in the printing which gave him a different hue in each copy. When Stan Lee saw the way his character turned out, he decided green suited him much better than gray.

Did you know that portable printing presses were used on the battlefields during the Civil War? These small, mobile presses allowed soldiers to set up print shops on the battlefield.

Lake Printing History

Lake Printing began in 1949 as a small Letterpress Shop in a basement located in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. In 1990 we moved into our present home: a 30,000 square foot facility on a 40-acre tract in Osage Beach, Missouri.

We boast top of the line Presses to handle projects of all sizes from wide format pieces to large runs. 9 Strong Words You Can Use In Print Marketing

While the graphic, colors, and paper all play a role in the success of your print marketing, one of the biggest aspects is the words that you use. A picture may say a thousand words, but there is still a fundamental difference between reading words and looking at images. As you're writing the material for your next print piece, keep these nine words in mind and see how much of an impact they can make.

Marketing is always about the consumer, when you use a word that denotes that, you capture the purpose of your marketing. Remind them why they need your product or service.

If you aren't seeing the results you desire from your marketing - try delivering your message right to their door. Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) gives you the opportunity to select the ideal market, and tell them exactly what YOU can do for them!

Who doesn't love to get something for free? You can quickly grab the attention of your clients when you offer something that they either can't get anywhere else or something that they will use.

Do you think that marketing is too expensive for your business? Don't count on it! Visit our website for a FREE quote! See how easy you can reach your clientele through our print materials, promotional products and more.

Using this word can help to show your consumer WHY the need what you offer. Because you're the best, because you're faster than the competitor, and because you have the best prices.

Why do you need print marketing? Because your clients need to see what you have to offer. A customer may not just wander into your door on their own, but if you entice them through print marketing, you could see amazing results.

Allow your client the ability to feel secure in giving you their business. If they feel like they aren't risking anything to work with you, you've already won half the battle.

Are you looking for a risk-free way to market to your clients? Try promotional brochures. You can fit more information on them than a business card, while not overwhelming them. Include bright photos, powerful text and watch the sales come flying in.

When this "s" word comes up, you can't help but be interested. Provide special tips, tricks or deals to you clients, with this 'secret' information.

The secret to great marketing is great graphics. Did you know that companies who incorporate design usefully within their organizations increase the demands for their services and for their product? Hire the best graphic designers at the Lake of the Ozarks to create a print piece that will grab the attention of your clients.

Fast. Everyone wants something quickly, whether it's their breakfast or their product. By instantly gratifying that need, you can give them a payoff for their time/money.

Do you want to see instant results in your marketing? Add a call to action. Tell your customer what to do with the information you've given them. Do you want them to call you? Make your phone number bold and obvious. If you want them to visit your online retail store, use a QR code to direct them there or give them an offer they can't refuse for signing up for your newsletters.

If clients think that something won't last for very long, it creates a sense of urgency, thus improving your chance of them acting on your request.

Do you want to make great impressions around the holidays? Give them the gift of your services - but time is limited! Place your print or promotional order as soon as possible to guarantee it's finished in time.

Would you sign up for something that you thought would be difficult? Or a hassle? Your clients most likely won't either. Make buying from you EASY, efficient, hassle-free.

Are you looking for an easy way to grab the attention of new and old customers? Try a promotional product! Not only is it easy to place your order, but it's easy for your client to get a hold of you when your name and phone number is displayed prominently on their favorite pen.

Consumers are afraid of missing out - from deals to opportunities.

Do your customers know about the services you provide? Don't miss out on the chance to introduce yourself to them with a full-color banner. You can capitalize on your message with full-color photos, fonts, graphics and more.
