What Kind of Paper Should I Use For My Business Cards?

Having a great business card is one way to showcase your business or position.  Some are rectangular, while others can be square, circles or eye catching unique designs.  The question that often comes up is "what type of paper should I print it on?"  Lake Printing wants to give you some ideas and why certain paper is better depending on your style of card.

So what is business card paper?

Business card paper is generally designed so that it can fit easily into someone's pocket, purse or wallet.  It's also designed to be durable.  Business card attributes are:

Thickness

Finish

Color

Weight

Business card paper types vary and you'll want to consider the pros/cons of each type.  The typical types of business card paper are:

Card Stock - This is the most common type of business card paper, and it's typically pretty sturdy that can stand up to a lot of handling.  The weight of this paper is around 80 to 110 pounds per ream of paper.  There are several finishes that you can use including Matte, Glossy, Photo or Textured.  If you use a heavier card stock, it will become a more rigid card.  Heavier paper is also more expensive typically.

Matte Stock - This is a non-shiny finish that appeals to many business people.  It's smooth and looks like a more expensive card.  One thing about Matte is that you can write on it!  That allows you to add a phone number or make a note.  It comes in many colors, so you will have a lot to choose from.  One drawback is that color may seem duller than what you thought it would look like.

Photo Card Stock - If you want a photo quality finish to the card, then this is for you.  This is good for headshots or other photo like images or graphics.  Think real estate agent - they will typically use this kind of stock for their cards.

Glossy Stock - This stock is just as you think it will be...shiny.  If using colors on the card, a glossy stock will show them off.  Also, if using graphics on the card, the gloss will protect the colors and keep them from blurring.  These last long as well as they are protected from tearing or water damage.  A drawback is that you really can't write on them.

Textured Stock - These are cards where you feel something that is tactile.  Dots, weaves, waves, are just some examples.  This stock can have a glossy or a matte finish on it.  If you are using only one sided cards, these work, but due to the pressed technique of the card, they don't work well for two sided.

Choose your business cards based on your unique networking style.  If you are a law firm for example, a simple, elegant card is a good way to go.  If you are offering a fun, or whimsical product, then change up your card to make it stand out.   If you want to convey a high level of luxury, then make your card look luxurious!  We hope this helps you when it's time to order your next set of cards.  Our expert team at Lake Printing can show you the different types of card stock and assist you in the design as well.  Just give us a call at 573-346-0600.
