5 Things a Client Should Discuss with a Graphic Designer

You are planning to showcase a new product or service that your company is offering? The first thing you will want to do is have a strategy meeting with your marketing and sales team.  Planning the marketing strategy will help convey your vision to the graphic artist that will be working on the project.  After the strategy for the launch has been planned, schedule a meeting with the graphic designer who will be working on your project.

What to have prepared for the meeting with a graphic designer:

  1.     An overview of your company
  2.      Details about the product or service that you are launching
  3.      Target Audience for the new product or service.
  4.      Creative Design Ideas
  5.      Goals for the Project

Overview of the Company
The designer will rely on you as a resource for your company.  Tell the designer all the ins and outs of your company.  Good things to start with is how did the company get started, the mission statement, and what makes your company different from your competitors.  Allowing the designer to get a better grasp of your company will help him/her to set a mood in the artwork they will be providing.

Product / Service Details
Most people think the product or service will speak for itself.  This is not always true with every product.  It is good to bring the product with you to the meeting if possible.  If you will be marketing a service, bring a detailed document explaining the service.  By educating your designer, this will help them during the creative process.

Know Your Target Audience
Who will be receiving these marketing pieces?  With the advancement in technology and the changes in marketing, hitting your target audience is very important.  Each generation responds differently to marketing.  For example, if the audience you are trying to sell your product to is family-oriented, the designer needs to include kids and family experiences in their design work.

Creative Design Ideas
Even though the graphic designer will be creating the artwork, it is a good idea to tell them the ideas that you have for the artwork.  What colors and fonts do you like?  It is a good idea to keep all the company marketing efforts cohesive and branded in the same way so your clientele will recognize your company ads at a glance.

Goals and Message
What is the goal of the marketing pieces that will be created? What message do you want to deliver?  The message is one of the most important parts of the design process.  The designer may ask you several questions regarding the message.  Be prepared to talk in-depth to your designer about these.  When your designer understands the message and the goals of the project, they will be more likely to be able to give you exactly what you are looking for in the design.
